Given that intellectual property is now among the top targets of cyberattacks, companies should be taking steps to safeguard the critical information – through measures including document protection – to avoid suffering "brain drain," according to CSO magazine.

"We're seeing an evolution from a hacking perspective," Gary Loveland, partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, said, according to the news provider. "Before, [breaking in] was just a trophy to show you could get access to the data. Then there was identity theft. Now, there's a focus on IP because of the profit motive."

However, it's also important for companies to keep in mind that threats to IP don't only come in the form of cybercriminals, according to CSO. In fact, many incidents result from employee negligence or simple mistakes. For example, an employee could accidentally share a trade secret in an email or send a message to the wrong recipient.

With document protection, the implications of both scenarios can be avoided, experts say. That's because the tool will block access to specific information based on predetermined factors, including the user and the device attempting to open the file.
