By all accounts, cloud computing will continue to serve as a top technology priority for many organizations this year as they look to leverage its cost and flexibility benefits. However, as a recent CIO magazine report highlighted, the need to protect information – intellectual property especially – can't be lost during a migration.

Many companies began paying greater attention to this issue last year, when cloud adoption skyrocketed. However, they must remain vigilant when expanding their cloud use this year, according to CIO.

"Consider adding a layer of additional data security," the report advised.

That can be completed by adding a document protection solution, experts agree. It will restrict access to IP and other confidential information and provide security measures that stay with the individual file whether it's stored in the company's on-premise data center or on a cloud vendor's remote server.

Last month, TechTarget also published a report that addressed the need to protect data stored in the cloud. The news provider said access control for sensitive information must be among adopters' top priorities.
