With the increased use of and reliance on smartphones and tablets in the enterprise, it has become common for IT departments to oversee these programs with mobile device management (MDM) solutions, which govern and oversee such practices. However, it might also be wise for organizations to deploy document security measures as well.
"Enterprise IT and security teams are stretched thin by the growing number of mobile device types invading the enterprise – many owned by employees – the variety of [operating systems] and the sheer volume of mobile apps users are requesting," a Computerworld Australia report noted.
Most companies' first reaction is to deploy a mobility management tool. However, that may not be enough as threats evolve.
Adding a document security solution will reduce the stress of mobility as the safety of confidential data is improved, experts say. Focusing at the document level will mean that protective measures remain with information no matter where it travels, whether between devices or in and out of the enterprise network.
According to a CSO magazine report, 2012 could be a "data security minefield" for companies when it comes to mobility. That's why it's imperative that every available step is taken to protect data.
