The benefits of technology can't be denied, but a new report from industry organization CompTIA demonstrates that a greater focus on innovation is also leading to an increase in information security vulnerabilities for many companies.

As a result, experts agree that organizations should take it upon themselves to fully secure critical data. For example, a document security solution will ensure that files containing confidential or otherwise sensitive materials – such as trade secrets and intellectual property – will remain protected.

These tools could become more popular moving forward, considering 83 percent of respondents to CompTIA's survey said security threats are on the rise. Researchers blame the growing number of endpoints for making it easier to access information.

"Billions of devices connect to the internet daily, and with each touch point there's a potential for new security vulnerabilities," CompTIA vice president of research Tim Herbert said.

The growth in device numbers, thanks to mobility, won't slow anytime soon. According to Forrester Research, there will be 350 million enterprise smartphones in use in 2016.
