The National Association of Manufacturers recently submitted a report to the U.S. Trade Representative, reiterating the its stance on the need for organizations within the manufacturing industry to protect intellectual property.
"The NAM is making this submission to raise awareness in the wider American public, the Congress and the [Obama] administration of the impact that [intellectual property rights] theft and erosion of IP protection has on manufacturing, broadly defined," the comments noted.
According to NAM, when trade secrets and IP are stolen the implications can be serious for the market at large. Not only is a company affected by a loss in sales, exports and revenue, but the safety of the general public is put at risk when counterfeit products are released, the organization stated.
It added that NAM members are willing to work with the U.S. government to improve the security of intellectual property.
One way that can be accomplished is to deploy a document protection solution, according to experts. The technology can restrict access to pre-determined files, which will protect the information contained within them throughout the information life cycle.
