"We needed to find a simple, cost-effective, and user-friendly DRM solution that allowed us to protect our materials and yet still offer a pain-free experience for our paying customers. Vitrium Security met all our requirements.” - Jennifer Schneider, Director of Publications, NITA

Company Overview

The National Institute for Trial Advocacy is a non-profit organization that provides legal advocacy skills training. It provides resources and materials promoting legal education globally, especially to nations that are still developing a strong legal framework.

Key Challenges

Prior to implementing a digital rights management (DRM) solution to protect the training documents that they sell and use in their training programs, they simply emailed unprotected PDF files, and occasionally mailed printed versions to customers who requested them. This unfortunately resulted in copying, unauthorized file sharing, and illegal distribution of their copyrighted and revenue-generating materials.

The Solution – Vitrium Security

"NITA is a non-profit business with a need to protect our revenue-generating materials. We needed to find a simple, cost-effective, and user-friendly DRM solution that allowed us to protect our copyrighted materials, set permission and controls on who can access our documents, and yet still offer a pain-free experience for our paying customers," states Ms. Schneider. "We ended up selecting Vitrium Security because it met all our requirements with the bonus that our customers wouldn’t need to download any plug-ins to view our secured content.”

New DRM Process

NITA’s process is relatively simple. They have a database of PDF-based training materials where, upon request from one of their customers, they upload a PDF file into the Vitrium Security system. They then apply their desired DRM policies such as limits on who can view and unlock the document and how many computers the document can be opened on, among other document control features. Certain customers, like professors or instructors, will gain access to their protected documents for a full semester, whereas other customers may only be granted a certain number of days’ access. All of this can be done quite simply in Vitrium Security.

Since using the document DRM solution from Vitrium, NITA has experienced a noticeable change in the distribution and access of their training materials. They still distribute their materials via email, however, with the added DRM controls from Vitrium Security, they now feel more secure knowing that the documents are encrypted. They’re also more confident knowing that their vital information is getting into to the right hands, and that illegal distribution, unauthorized file sharing, and copying have been kept to a minimum, if not eliminated.
