Cloud is Imperative, Though Not Without Risks

Cloud is imperative, though not without risks

As companies continue to acquire more data, many executives are fearful of inadvertently exposing sensitive information through poor practices, especially as the cyber risk landscape becomes more sophisticated. This was highlighted in a recent study of 100 CIOs by Protiviti, which revealed that 84 percent of respondents are either somewhat or very concerned about digital document security initiatives.

The evolving threat landscape is encouraging more decision-makers to adopt cloud services, yet many firms put too much trust in providers, as only 45 percent of CIOs test vendors' document protection programs and initiatives, the study noted.

"Looking towards 2013, CIOs are charged with juggling multiple priorities, with regulation, integration and migration projects putting additional pressure on busy IT departments," said Phil Sheridan, managing director of Robert Half Technology. "But the risks of not migrating to the cloud, notably the achievement of significant cost reductions, may outweigh the potential security risks that concern IT executives."

Decision-makers should consider using advanced document rights management tools and other access control solutions that limit unauthorized use of confidential resources. By adopting these services, organizations may be able to implement the cloud with fewer concerns.
