Understanding Staff Users vs. End Users in Vitrium Security DRM

Understanding terminology in a digital rights management (DRM) solution like Vitrium is very important. The term "users" gets freely passed around and sometimes we're not always talking about the same thing. We hope this article will help clarify the 2 different types of users in Vitrium and what each of them can or cannot do.

Staff Users vs. End Users

The key difference is this:

  • STAFF USERS are those who control the content
  • END USERS are those who access the protected content

Staff users vs End users 3-1

A Deeper Look into STAFF USERS

Staff Users are most often the employees of your organization who are responsible for uploading the content into Vitrium for protection, managing the settings, assigning permissions, and so on.

You can also think of them as Vitrium Administrators: they are the ones using the key functions within Vitrium's main admin app. These functions can include:

  • Configuring the Vitrium account and its main settings (watermarks, content settings, DRM settings)
  • Adding or importing users and groups
  • Adding folders and uploading content for protection
  • Assigning permissions to users or groups
  • Distributing protected content
  • Reviewing the user activity log and other reports

All activities above can also be handled by Vitrium Enterprise APIs. The Staff User would need to be assigned as "API user".

Staff User Roles

There is only one type of Staff User role in Vitrium Pro accounts (Master Admin) but Enterprise accounts can choose from 5 different roles. Click here to learn more about Staff Roles. This option is available to Pro accounts for an add-on fee.

How to Add a Staff User in Vitrium

In your Vitrium account, go to the SETTINGS tab, then click "Staff Users". It's usually a straightforward process but just in case, be sure to watch this quick video too.

A Deeper Look into END USERS

End Users are the individuals who have permission to access the protected content you distribute to them, whether it's via email, the Vitrium user portal, or another business system you use.

End users do not have administrative access to the main Vitrium admin app. They would only access the protected content, whether that's the secure web viewer, the downloadable protected PDF (if you allow this for them), or the user portal if this is how you plan to distribute Vitrium-protected content.

Depending on your industry, end users can be

  • Customers or clients
  • Members of your association
  • Teachers or tutors
  • Students or trainees
  • Partners or distributors
  • Even your employees!*

*If you have employees who will also be administrators in Vitrium, just be sure to add them as both a Staff User and End User in Vitrium.
